Frequently Asked Questions
-
How can you help me?As a dietitian, I am trained to spend time listening to and coaching my clients on taking practical and sustainable steps to improve their health and wellness. Whether we meet in person or via telehealth (video call), I will create a safe space to explore your relationship with food and with your body, to ask questions, to share your health and lifestyle concerns, and most importantly--to be seen and heard. Using the information you share with me, I will work collaboratively with you to design a roadmap towards healing that is realistic, attainable, and takes into consideration your unique needs and goals. In addition to nutrition interventions, I may recommend supportive supplements, exercise, stress reduction techniques and/or mind-body modalities that are in alignment with your goals and desires.
-
Will you help me lose weight? My goal is always to address and work with the root causes of disease in the body. Excess weight is often a symptom of a more complex issue--whether hormonal imbalance, chronic stress, inflammation, digestive issues, etc.--that, once addressed, allows the body to return to a state of balance. I will take your weight goals into consideration when designing your nutrition plan, but will not specifically focus on or set calorie or weight goals for you. Instead, we will concentrate on using nutrient-dense foods to fuel your body and lifestyle activities, teaching you how to build a balanced meal, and determining if certain foods are causing inflammation that might be causing excess weight.

What is an integrative and functional Registered Dietitian?A Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is a food and nutrition expert who has met academic and professional requirements which includes, but not limited to, a minimum of a bachelor's degree with course work approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Accreditation Council and has earned credentials through the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s (CDR). Integrative and functional dietitians are nutrition practitioners whose core philosophy centers around a holistic, personalized approach to health and healing. We integrate a variety of nutrition therapies including whole foods, tailored supplements, and mind-body modalities in clinical practice. Rather than simply treating symptoms, we seek out and address the underlying "upstream" causes of symptoms through evidenced-based approaches.

How will we meet?I am happy to meet with you either via secure video call, or in person at my office in Black Mountain, NC.
-
Do you provide meal plans and/or recipes?During your initial consultation, we will discuss your current food choices, where you shop for food, and the amount of time each day/week you are able to devote to cooking. I will use that information to customize an outline for your weekly meals/snacks that accounts for your needs and preferences and allows for flexibility. I will also provide resources--such as recipe websites/blogs and cookbooks--that are aligned with your nutritional needs and goals.
-
What is your cancellation policy? To avoid a $75 fee, please provide cancellation notice at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled appointment. Please contact me via email or phone (808.859.2742) to cancel or reschedule your appointment.
-
Do you accept health insurance?I am considered an “out of network” provider and it is your responsibility to pay for services rendered. I am happy to provide you with a superbill (medical receipt) after each of our consultations for you to submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Please note, if insurance denies your claim or no longer provides reimbursement for services, it is the client’s responsibility to pay for the services rendered.
-
How do I know if I will be reimbursed for services by my insurance company? In my experience, many--but not all--private health insurance plans will reimburse (at least partially) for nutrition counseling with a superbill. It is your responsibility to contact your insurance company to find out about reimbursement. Use the phone number on the back of your insurance card and ask them these questions: 1. Do I have out-of-network benefits to see a registered dietitian for the following CPT codes: Initial session: 97802 Follow-up sessions: 97803 2. If yes, what amount of the fee will you cover? 3. Is pre-authorization required in order to submit an out-of-network claim? 4. What is the deductible, and how much of the deductible have I met? 5. Is there a copayment for each visit or what is the percentage of coverage? 6. How many sessions are covered per year and in what month does my policy year begin? 7. Are there any restrictions and/or limitations to my coverage? (Diagnosis codes?) 8. Do I need a physician's referral?
-
Do you offer any discounts, sliding scale fees, or payment plans?Providing access to affordable healthcare is important to me, and I offer a limited number of sliding scale slots. Please contact me to discuss these rates if you have a financial need. Payment plans are available for 3- and 6-month programs and most follow-up packages.
